Children's Programs - How We Can Help

Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge provides numerous programs for children in our ten-parish area who are coping with a cancer diagnosis or the cancer diagnosis of a parent. There is no cost to our families for participation in any of our children's activities.

Our local Candlelighters program is for children who have cancer and their siblings and is designed for children from birth through age twenty-one. Monthly activities provide children and parents the opportunity to interact, provide mutual support, and participate in family activities in a safe, supportive environment.

A Candlelighter Grant is available for families in which a child has cancer. This one-time $300 grant is income dependent and is given to the family to help defray the high costs associated with a cancer diagnosis. The child must be a registered client of Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.

Camp Care, our summer day camp for children in Candlelighters, is held for one week in July. Campers must be between the ages of 5 to 13 to attend camp and must be currently in treatment and/or three years out of treatment. Campers enjoy varied activities, including fishing, rock climbing, laser tag, movies, and much more. An on-site nurse provides medical oversight, while the children have fun in a safe environment.

If you are over 16 years of age and interested in becoming a Camp Care Counselor click here for an application.

Our Kids Kare program is for children between the ages of four and eighteen who have a parent or guardian with cancer. Monthly activities provide opportunities for interaction, parent to parent and child to child.
